HD Blu-ray High-Resolution Video
Created to herald in the age of HD, Blu-ray media storage technology packs more than five times the data density capabilities of a DVD into a disc that's the exact same size. Combo units that facilitate the production of regular CDs and DVDs in a Blu-ray unit are now widely available, affording consumers the opportunity to enjoy this powerful new technology.
The Storage Power of HD Blu-ray Technology
Capable of storing up to nine hours of HD video footage on a single disc, a dual-layer BD-R or BD-RE disc can hold a walloping 50 gigabytes of data. "BD" is the root acronym used for the Blu-ray format, with the BD-R variant referring to discs that are recordable only once. Just as with CD-RWs, BD-REs can be recorded, erased and reused at a later date.
A single-layer BD-R or BD-RE disc was designed to hold a 135-minute feature-length movie in HD, in the MPEG-2 media format. While conventional CD or DVD players are unable to read BD formats, combo units designed to play back BD discs are able to read both CDs and DVDs. HD Blu-ray technology is powered by shorter-wavelength lasers, which facilitate a much greater data density than the standard red lasers used in modern CD and DVD players.
