CD Duplicator Tower: What Setting for Audio CDs?

Thursday, January 21, 2010 7:00:00 PM America/New_York

recording audio to CD DuplicatorThe setting for audio CDs using a CD duplicator tower is not really a setting at all.  There are two factors that affect a CD recording onto disc: audio ripping speed and reader to writer performance.

Audio ripping speed determines the rate of audio extraction from the master CD disc.  unfortunately audio extraction can proceed at a higher rate then the CD-R drive can handle and led to errors on the copy.  This is because there is no 'error correction' on audio, only in data recording.  Essentially a DVD-ROM reader and DVD CD writer drive can only error correct data by predicting the data stream and creating it's best guess at the point of error. In a audio disc this manifests itself as pops and clicks in the recorded copy.

Benefits of CD/DVD Autoloading Duplicator

Sunday, January 3, 2010 7:00:00 PM America/New_York

When considering an automated auto-loading DVD duplicator several key points you should consider.

  1.  How many discs do you plan on duplicating?
  2.  What type of label are you planning on printing on your discs?
  3. Do you plan on using copy protection?
  4. How quickly to you want to turn around your disc job?

In order to realize the advantages of an auto loading DVD duplicator it's important to understand what it does, and what it does not do.

An auto-loading disc duplicator automates the process of placing discs in the disc burners and removing them after the recording is done. The process is done for a auto-loading DVD duplicator but if you plan on printing in-line the next step would be to place the disc into a printer tray.  The printer would label the disc and then the robotics would remove the disc and place it in the output bin.

Can I Upgrade a IDE Duplicator to a SATA Duplicator?

Thursday, October 15, 2009 8:00:00 PM America/New_York

SATA duplicatorUpgrading an IDE DVD duplicator to a SATA DVD duplicator is possible but expensive.

The IDE bus has been a mainstay of the computer industry for over 10 years and a disruptive technology introduced to disc duplicators about 5 years ago.

The original bus for CD DVD duplicators (DVD-R pre-authoring and authoring only) was SCSI.  SCSI was replaced when Pioneer and other drive manufacturers released the General Purpose DVD drives which were only IDE.  SCSI was never a big player in the computer world (outside of Enterprise applications) with the exception of Apple's Macs.

Best Value in DVD Duplicators

Wednesday, October 7, 2009 8:00:00 PM America/New_York

dvd duplicator valueWhen 'value' comes up in a discussion about a DVD duplicator there are several questions you need to think about and answer for yourself to determine the best fit for your specific needs.

  1. Application: What are you planning on using the disc duplicator for? it may sound like an easy question but you need to think about your time factor for producing discs by recording and labeling. Hours, days, or weeks?
  2. Output: How many discs do you need to produce that are exactly the same or 'one-offs' (different data and label for each disc)?
  3. Cost: What is your budget?

How Much Time is Saved With a Hard Drive Embedded CD DVD Duplicator?

Friday, October 2, 2009 8:00:00 PM America/New_York

http://www.flickr.com/people/twon/how much time is saved with a hdd cd duplicator? is a question that comes up a lot when discussing duplicator features with our clients.

To answer this question we need to understand a little bit on the three recording modes of a controller based DVD duplicator found in a typical CD DVD tower.

  1. Disc to Disc
  2. Disc to HDD to Disc
  3. Disc to HDD

Disc to Disc: This mode is a direct reading to recording process. One simply inserts a CD master copy into the reader drive and then unrecorded CDs into the recorder drives and the duplicator starts copying.  A CD DVD duplicator that does not have a hard drive runs only in this mode.

DVD Duplication, Encryption and Copy Protection

Wednesday, September 23, 2009 8:00:00 PM America/New_York

DVD duplicator publisherEncryption and Copy Protection get a lot of attention  in the press and when discussing disc duplication. Two elements are important to remember.

  1. Are you planning on encrypting or copy protecting your content?
  2. Are you planning on breaking someone elses encryption or copy protection?

We  will start with number 2

First as it's the most important.

In the United States and most countries, breaking or disabling copy protection or encryption is illegal.  Duplication equipment is not capable of breaking or bypassing copy protection or encryption. This applies more to DVD and Blu-ray then it does CDs.  Most CDs are not copy protected/encrypted.  They may have a copy protect "flag" on the disc which will then make it impossible to use a duplicator. Nor should you, right?

How to burn a lot of recordable CDs and DVDs

Wednesday, July 1, 2009 8:00:00 PM America/New_York

CD/DVD duplicator tower and rack mount are the workhorse of dvd tower duplicatormany industries including independent music groups, church and ministry, sports organizations, marketing groups, videographers, education and software development and distribution. they are not used for some kind of nefarious production of pirated discs. CD DVD duplicators can not copy copy protected discs. If you are trying to copy a disc you got over at your local rental store it will not work. The units will not copy discs with copy protection, CD or DVD. One would have to look elsewhere for that capability.

DVD Publishers, DVD duplicators and DVD Copiers come in several distinct groups. The terms are somewhat loose in meaning and in the case of DVD copier it is used for both software copying (Usually illegal, at least in the US) and hardware DVD copiers which can not circumvent copy protection.

Five things to ask yourself before you buy a DVD duplicator

Monday, June 29, 2009 8:00:00 PM America/New_York

Five things to ask yourself before you buy a DVD Duplicator

5 questions to ask before you buy

 1.    How many discs do I need to burn in an hour?  A Week?
 2.    Is speed or unattended operation more important?
 3.    What do you plan to do with the disc after you record it?
 4.    Is labeling required?
 5.    Does printing and duplication need to be combined?

With the above questions answered you can have a better idea of what to shop for in a CD/DVD duplicator.  Unfortunately price does play a part in some elements of disc publishing. That is where a little knowledge goes a long way.

..Really the only thing without a price is your time.

Musician and Indie Band Disc Publisher

Sunday, May 31, 2009 8:00:00 PM America/New_York

music cdsIt's amazing to see the changes in music distribution.  I've used reel to reel tape, cassette, and then the big breakthrough with recordable CDs.

I remember wiring the home stereo into the computer after a sound card upgrade. Many a vinyl disc was 'ripped' as the process is now called.  All of a sudden the costs of producing your own music dropped significantly with the birth of digital audio and the CD audio recordable.  Garage bands gain a new tool of self promotion beyond the gig.

Now anyone can be a disc publisher. CDs are the calling card of a band or musician with the ability to slip one into the right persons hands.  It's not always easy to slip a streaming audio file into someones hands.
