Preserving a DVD may seem better using a plastic jewel case over a paper sleeves for a number of reasons, however with the right sleeve it makes it more attractive as an alternative to plastic cases.
- A plastic case provides greater impact protection over paper sleeves.
- A soft plastic CD case can provide excellent protection and excellent durability.
- CD jewel cases also provide good protection and labeling options but are fragile.
- Paper sleeves have the major advantage of compact storage if the right precautions are taken.

The shift has been over to binder sleeved albums, typically holding 8 discs a sleeve/page. They certainly work in the intended purpose but are bulky and don't provide any protection to the disc. Worse, especially in a car environment, dust gets into the sleeves and scratches the discs. It's far better to store your original discs in jewel cases or plastic CD cases if you are going to be taking them in and out all the time on the road.
Finding the right CD packaging can be frustrating if you don't know what to look for. There are similarities to the supermarket and the question: Paper or Plastic?
