The ubiquitous DVD case looks the same on the surface. An explanation is in order.
First DVD cases come in many different thicknesses however the size is always the same in length and height. The standard thickness of a DVD case is 14mm. DVD cases also come in 4mm, 5mm, 7mm (slim DVD cases) and then the chubby multi disc types that vary in width from 27mm to 33mm. This is why it's important to know the thickness if you are going to use DVD case inserts: most DVD case inserts are designed around 14mm cases. Also the slim DVD cases usually have no provision for booklets as is the same with the chubby DVD cases. Read More

How to label your DVD
Thursday, July 8, 2010 4:17:45 PM America/New_York
One of the great challenges to burning your own DVDs is how you label them. Certainly the old standby, a sharpie pen can be used but that solution leaves much to be desired. Sharpie pens use solvent based ink. This ink can attack some protective coatings on CDs however DVDs are constructed differently then CDs so the solvent would need to breakdown the polycarbonate layer (recordable DVDs are a sandwich of two polycarbonate discs glued together with the reflective and dye layer as the "meat". So as far as DVDs go Sharpies are not going to damage the dye layer but may damage a printable layer specific to inkjet printing which is outside the sandwich and applied to the top of the DVD recordable. That is more a cosmetic issue then something to be concerned with. Read More
