Recordable DVD-R Disc Media

To learn more about recordable DVD media, request our free

If you're looking for the best prices and widest selection of quality recordable DVD-R media, DVD-R blanks & printable DVD-R disc media, you found it! We carry a complete selection of blank recordable DVD-R media from the industry's leading recordable dvd suppliers - Imation, MAM-A, Primera, Falcon, SKC, Taiyo Yuden, and Verbatim . You'll find the style of recordable DVD media you're looking for to meet your specific DVD recording, dvd duplicating and dvd printing needs right here. We'll even custom silk-screen blank DVD media with your graphics.

Recordable DVD-Rs come in a wide variety of top surfaces. "Branded" dvd discs have the manufacturer’s logo and other printed information silk-screened onto the top surface of the disc at the factory and often provide lined areas for handwriting information onto the disc. "Printable" surfaces, on the other hand, allow you to print directly onto the disc. There are currently three different CD, DVD disc printing technologies available- thermal transfer, thermal re-transfer, and inkjet (sometimes called ‘thermal inkjet’).

White Inkjet Printable dvds discs are specifically designed for use in inkjet disc printers. These are the most popular printers used with recordable DVD discs. Their low cost makes it much more affordable for general office use and low production run requirements. These discs have special surfaces designed to absorb the ink and typically cost a little more then a lacquer or branded discs. Top surfaces come in several colors, with silver inkjet printable being the most popular.

Thermal Printable DVD surfaced discs are used with printers that heat and then transfer a wax based image, from a printer ribbon, onto a DVD-R. Thermal printable media requires an extra coating on the top surface in order to protect the disc from the heating process. Discs that are designed for multi-color thermal transfer (printing more then one color on a disc) must have several protective coatings on the disc surface. That’s because when using these printers, the disc is heated multiple times thereby increasing the chance of damage or unsatisfactory printing results.

Many "blank" discs are coated in a final layer of lacquer and are often referred to as "shiny" discs. These lacquer top surface discs can provide satisfactory results for single color thermal printing, but for multicolor thermal printing purposes, we strongly recommend using ‘thermal color approved’ media.

Everest Printable DVD discs refer to discs specially formulated to work with Rimage’s Everest printer, and their patented thermal retransfer printing method. They require a special surface because of the rigors of this unique printing process. Thermal retransfer uses a special ribbon called a ‘retransfer roll’ to blend multiple colors for a more photographic reproduction of an image. This unique printing process requires disc surfaces that are specially formulated for the Rimage Everest printer.

Using other thermal or inkjet printable surfaces in an Everest printer can result in the top surface and reflective layer being ‘torn’ off the disc. Unfortunately, some people try to use media not certified for thermal retransfer printing, and end up with damaged discs. Does this happen every single time? No, but given the time, money and per disc print costs, is it worth it? Everest certified media costs more because it’s made differently. The additional, specially formulated top surface layers add to both material costs and production time.

Each DVD-R manufacturer has a unique top surface formulation for inkjet printable media so you will see differences between brands in color accuracy, ink absorbency, printed color vividness, and ability for the disc to dry quickly after being printed. Lower priced DVD-R brands tend to absorb ink slower, not blend colors as well, dry slower, and sometimes smudge more easily.

We can also provide bulk CD and DVD duplication services, check out Bulk DVD Duplication.

DVD cases

Friday, July 9, 2010 10:29:31 AM America/New_York

The ubiquitous DVD case looks the same on the surface. An explanation is in order. First DVD cases come in many different thicknesses however the size is always the same in length and height. The standard thickness of a DVD case is 14mm. DVD cases also come in 4mm, 5mm, 7mm (slim DVD cases) and then the chubby multi disc types that vary in width from 27mm to 33mm. This is why it's important to know the thickness if you are going to use DVD case inserts: most DVD case inserts are designed around 14mm cases. How to label your DVD

Thursday, July 8, 2010 4:17:45 PM America/New_York

One of the great challenges to burning your own DVDs is how you label them. Certainly the old standby, a sharpie pen can be used but that solution leaves much to be desired. Sharpie pens use solvent based ink. This ink can attack some protective coatings on CDs however DVDs are constructed differently then CDs so the solvent would need to breakdown the polycarbonate layer (recordable DVDs are a sandwich of two polycarbonate discs glued together with the reflective and dye layer as the "meat". So as far as DVDs go Sharpies are not going to damage the dye layer but may damage a printable layer specific to inkjet printing which is outside the sandwich and applied to the top of the DVD recordable. That is more a cosmetic issue then something to be concerned with. Read More

Difference Between Thermal Inkjet and Inkjet CD Printing

Thursday, March 4, 2010 7:00:00 PM America/New_York

thermal inkjetThermal ink jet CD label printing and inkjet CD label printing are general terms used for ink jet printing utilizing a nozzle or 'jet' to spray ink in a very precise manner.

  • Thermal inkjet
  • Pizzo-electric inkjet
  • Bubble-jet

Thermal Inkjet printing heats up the ink to create 'pressure' that causes the ink to spray out of the print head nozzle.

Pizzo-electric uses a device similar to the old 'joy buzzer' that vibrates when electricity is applied to it.  This creates a very precise metered amount of ink to spray out of the print head nozzle.  The effect is a well rounded 'dot' instead of a irregular shaped application.

Types of USB Flash Drive Duplicator Towers

Thursday, February 18, 2010 7:00:00 PM America/New_York

USB Flash DuplicatorsUSB flash drive duplicators are available as standalone and "PC connected".  A standalone USB duplicator eliminates the need for a PC or software and provides a much faster interface then a PC connect USB duplicator.  In fact the standalone USB duplicator runs at about 33MB a second per dedicated channel although actual USB drive copying speed depends on the type of drive. Asynchronous copy allows each channel to function independently and copies directly from 128MB of built-in memory so there is no need to start and end a copy cycle at the same time. Additionally a Source Analysis feature identifies the content on the master and logically copies only the data to speed up the copy cycle.

Information on CD Packaging

Monday, February 1, 2010 7:00:00 PM America/New_York

CD Packaging, or Cat packaging? With so many sites and CD  packaging options it can be a tough choice in selecting the right CD packaging for your project. So where does one begin?

It's important to define your packaging needs and budget before you get on the phone or look up your favorite web site.  None of us want to be carrying a large handful of CD discs in jewel cases which make an excellent presentation but are heavy and fragile onto a plane or  crowded subway.  Nor do we want to be handing out DVD or CD discs at a trade show with fingerprints all over them (and the last pieces of pepperoni pizza you had for a quick lunch).

Certified Data Tape? Does it Make Sense?

Wednesday, January 27, 2010 7:00:00 PM America/New_York

One of the puzzles of the universe is a branding of used back-up tape as 'certified'.  The idea being that a backup tape is like used tires and one can determine the expected life of the used product.  The amazing part is the concept of storing backup data on used data tape.  Now in the market they don't like to use the word 'used' but that is exactly what certified data tapes are and further their 'cheap' price is deceitful.

Many times we have priced tapes to find some amazing deals only to find out that they are actually the used data tapes.  Very little information is provided on exactly what a 'certified tape' means. Nor is there any industry studies on the consequences of using such 'certified back up tapes'. One is simply buying a used tire with little or no tread left.  Trust your back up data only to new back up tapes if you care about recovering your data.

CD Duplicator Tower: What Setting for Audio CDs?

Thursday, January 21, 2010 7:00:00 PM America/New_York

recording audio to CD DuplicatorThe setting for audio CDs using a CD duplicator tower is not really a setting at all.  There are two factors that affect a CD recording onto disc: audio ripping speed and reader to writer performance.

Audio ripping speed determines the rate of audio extraction from the master CD disc.  unfortunately audio extraction can proceed at a higher rate then the CD-R drive can handle and led to errors on the copy.  This is because there is no 'error correction' on audio, only in data recording.  Essentially a DVD-ROM reader and DVD CD writer drive can only error correct data by predicting the data stream and creating it's best guess at the point of error. In a audio disc this manifests itself as pops and clicks in the recorded copy.

Certainly both have reflective layers but the similarities end there.  A recordable DVD has a purple (or brown) recording side and a CD recordable has a silver green or blue appearance.  The difference in color is caused by the interaction of the reflective layer, usually silver and the recording dye layer.  Because the dyes are different and have different optical characteristics they appear a different color.  When the reflective layer is different then silver, like gold then the colors specifically on a DVD go from purple to brown.

Benefits of CD/DVD Autoloading Duplicator

Sunday, January 3, 2010 7:00:00 PM America/New_York

When considering an automated auto-loading DVD duplicator several key points you should consider.

  1.  How many discs do you plan on duplicating?
  2.  What type of label are you planning on printing on your discs?
  3. Do you plan on using copy protection?
  4. How quickly to you want to turn around your disc job?

In order to realize the advantages of an auto loading DVD duplicator it's important to understand what it does, and what it does not do.

An auto-loading disc duplicator automates the process of placing discs in the disc burners and removing them after the recording is done. The process is done for a auto-loading DVD duplicator but if you plan on printing in-line the next step would be to place the disc into a printer tray.  The printer would label the disc and then the robotics would remove the disc and place it in the output bin.

CD Recordable Discs - Best Music Quality Ratings

Monday, December 28, 2009 1:51:47 PM America/New_York

Although CD recordable blanks are not specifically rated for audio there are several excellent choices for recording audio.  Recordable CDs were originally intended for data storage and not specifically for audio formats.  The CD recordable data format easily adapted to the CD-Audio format, and the rest, as they say, is history.

CD Printer Review: Professional BD DVD CD Printers

Wednesday, December 16, 2009 7:00:00 PM America/New_York

Professional BD, DVD, CD printers

Unlike the home CD printer a professional DVD/CD printer is designed for continuous CD printing and features a built in disc tray that self aligns itself.

The links provide greater information on each DVD CD label printer to avoid a major novel on one page. If you have any questions or observations please give us feedback via the comments. We would love to hear from you. :)

Primera Technology

Primera uses in-line robotics in it's newest offerings. A long way from the old Composer series which had a swinging robotic arm.

Bravo II Auto-loader: Primera's auto-loaders and automated DVD duplicators use a Lexmark print engine. The Bravo II series use a two ink cartridge system. Primera/lexmark ink is proprietary, that is one can only buy Primera 'branded' cartridges. The Bravo II is PC and Mac compatible and connects via a USB cable. Includes disc labeling software. One year warranty

CD Printer Review: Home Blu-ray DVD CD Printers

Sunday, December 13, 2009 7:00:00 PM America/New_York

CD Printer Review

Our yearly review of DVD CD printers will cover home CD printers in the first part and professional DVD CD printers in the second part so the reader has a wider knowledge of the technologies available. Home CD printers change model numbers at a fairly quick rate so we would recommend Epson and Canon as a general rule for the casual disc labeling job.

Home CD printers use a special plastic template that guides the printable disc through a standard model ink jet printer that allows for straight path printing (can feed horizontally in addition to top feed). Disc labeling software is necessary for designing and printing and is included with advertised CD/DVD printers. It is possible

CD Printer: Cheapest Way to Print High Quality CD and DVD?

Wednesday, December 9, 2009 7:00:00 PM America/New_York

printing pressSurprisingly the cheapest way to print high quality CD-R and DVD-R is to out-source your production.  That is have a service bureau or duplication business do the printing for you.  The price may seem high until one figures in the cost of purchasing CD printer equipment, printable discs and ink.  Also any labor costs need to be figured into the cost.

Lets move onto some other cheap methods for printing labels.  Probably the most obvious and also the worst method of labeling CDs and DVDS is to use stick on labels.  Several major issues with stick on labels include the glue damaging the recording layer, label peeling off in the player and the unbalancing of the disc while recording and playback. This wobble damages the drive and makes a poor quality copy.

Difference Between Cheap Printable DVDs

Saturday, December 5, 2009 2:26:30 PM America/New_York

There is a difference between cheap printable DVDs and more expensive printable DVDs. It would seem like one catagory "cheap printable DVDs"  but what exactly does that mean?
cheaper then what?
My point being 'cheap' is subjective.  Is the requirement based on price only or does the disc need to perform at a certain level?
Recordable DVDs are based on commodity products like polycarbonate and metals like gold and silver.

Making a Copy-Protected CD DVD Disc

Sunday, November 15, 2009 7:00:00 PM America/New_York

copy protectionThere are a number of technologies available to make a copy-protected disc using recordable CDs and DVDs. Basically two approaches exist: Hardware and software. This can also be combined to make a more robust solution.

  • Hardware can modified to create illegal TOC or  files that make it difficult for a casual copy to be made.
  • Discs can have special encryption encapsulation built into the first session of a blank disc like HexaLock. HexaLock provides protection on CD-R, DVD-Video and DVD-R Data recordable media.
  • Rimage offers a product called "Rimage Video Protect" that works with the Rimage Producer and Professional Series Disc Publishers to encrypt on the fly.  It provides excellent protection without affecting its playability in computer and standalone player.

How to Record Sermons and Make a CD Ministry

Monday, November 9, 2009 7:00:00 PM America/New_York

Not all of us have a home recording studio nor the luxury of one single place  to record sermons and praise & worship services.  It can be a great challenge to make a successful recording when the day is complicated enough with all the activities a ministry brings.

Some of the options available for recording include:

  1. Analog cassette recorder
  2. DAT (Digital Audio Tape) recorder
  3. Hard Drive (sound card to hard drive)
  4. Digital recorder (uses flash non-volatile memory)

The most convenient recording device is the digital audio recorder or "PCM recorder"  (Pulse Code Modulation) which is designed around recording analog audio to digital: that is the human voice or acoustical musical instruments.

Better to Preserve a DVD in Paper Sleeves or Plastic Jewel Cases?

Wednesday, October 28, 2009 8:00:00 PM America/New_York

archiving data is like picklingPreserving a DVD  may seem better using a plastic jewel case over a paper sleeves for a number of reasons, however with the right sleeve it makes it more attractive as an alternative to plastic cases.

  1. A plastic case provides greater impact protection over paper sleeves.
  2. A soft plastic CD case can provide excellent protection and excellent durability.
  3. CD jewel cases also provide good protection and labeling options but are fragile.
  4. Paper sleeves have the major advantage of compact storage if the right precautions are taken.

Recycling CD and DVD Cases: Where Does it all Go?

Thursday, October 22, 2009 8:00:00 PM America/New_York

Recycling your CD and DVD boxes can be challenging if you don't know the numbers.

  • CD Jewel cases - Polystyrene.   Number #1 plastic
  •  Soft CD and DVD boxes and cases, polypropylene.  Number #5 plastic
  •  DVD cases like you see at the store are made of  polypropylene.   Number #5 plastic.
DVD boxes are available that contain recycled polypropylene plastic just a matter of economics.  Virgin polypropylene plastic costs more money and is necessary for many plastic disc packaging but the plastic can and does get re-used.  Ironically recycled polypropylene even ends up in the manufacture of plastic garbage bins.  If your town recycles best bet is the #5 is always accepted.

Good and Bad Points About Clamshell CD Holders?

Tuesday, October 20, 2009 8:00:00 PM America/New_York

CshellClamshell CD holders to the uninitiated are a soft plastic CD cases in the shape of a clamshell.  There are clamshells, clam shells and Cshells (which is a trademarked name) and they all are basically the same with a few distinctions.

  •  Some cases do not have a hole and some do.  This is to keep the disc in place and 'lock' it into the other side of the clamshell. Some cases feature a  lock or catch to hold the case closed and do not have any hole.
  • The clamshell case is unique and can be printed on. However it is difficult to read on it's side or stored vertically.
  • Clamshell cases come in many different colors that are both transparent and opaque.  Clear cases provide the best view of the disc label inside.

Can I Upgrade a IDE Duplicator to a SATA Duplicator?

Thursday, October 15, 2009 8:00:00 PM America/New_York

SATA duplicatorUpgrading an IDE DVD duplicator to a SATA DVD duplicator is possible but expensive.

The IDE bus has been a mainstay of the computer industry for over 10 years and a disruptive technology introduced to disc duplicators about 5 years ago.

The original bus for CD DVD duplicators (DVD-R pre-authoring and authoring only) was SCSI.  SCSI was replaced when Pioneer and other drive manufacturers released the General Purpose DVD drives which were only IDE.  SCSI was never a big player in the computer world (outside of Enterprise applications) with the exception of Apple's Macs.

printing questionsHere are a few more questions we have been asked about CD printers. Labeling your CDs, DVDs and Blu-ray recordable discs is a great way to give a professional look to your projects.

Can you use an inkjet printer on thermal dvd?

Yes and no, You can use it but it does not dry and just smudges. Inkjet sprays a dye and thermal applies a wax based resin to the disc. If you don't want a mess buy inkjet printable discs.

Can I put labels on printable dvd?

You can put labels on printable DVDs but it's not recommended.  Stick on labels are a bad idea with DVDs.

Best Value in DVD Duplicators

Wednesday, October 7, 2009 8:00:00 PM America/New_York

dvd duplicator valueWhen 'value' comes up in a discussion about a DVD duplicator there are several questions you need to think about and answer for yourself to determine the best fit for your specific needs.

  1. Application: What are you planning on using the disc duplicator for? it may sound like an easy question but you need to think about your time factor for producing discs by recording and labeling. Hours, days, or weeks?
  2. Output: How many discs do you need to produce that are exactly the same or 'one-offs' (different data and label for each disc)?
  3. Cost: What is your budget?

How Much Time is Saved With a Hard Drive Embedded CD DVD Duplicator?

Friday, October 2, 2009 8:00:00 PM America/New_York

http://www.flickr.com/people/twon/how much time is saved with a hdd cd duplicator? is a question that comes up a lot when discussing duplicator features with our clients.

To answer this question we need to understand a little bit on the three recording modes of a controller based DVD duplicator found in a typical CD DVD tower.

  1. Disc to Disc
  2. Disc to HDD to Disc
  3. Disc to HDD

Disc to Disc: This mode is a direct reading to recording process. One simply inserts a CD master copy into the reader drive and then unrecorded CDs into the recorder drives and the duplicator starts copying.  A CD DVD duplicator that does not have a hard drive runs only in this mode.

Advantages and Disadvantages of a CD/DVD Disc

Monday, September 28, 2009 3:56:48 PM America/New_York

adavantages of DVDWe were asked the other day about the advantages and disadvantages of CD-R or DVD recordable disc.

This certainly is not an easy answer with all the various types of data storage available today.

CD-R and DVD-R and DVD+R are 'Write Once, Read Many' formats.  This capability is called "WORM' for short.

This means you can only write to the disc once (or in multi-session several times to different locations on the disc before finalizing).

This is unlike other formats used for hard drives, flash memory, backup tape and certain optical formats like the +RW and -RW in DVD recordable that can be erased and re written hundreds or millions of times (in disc based hard drives).

A CD-R or recordable DVD provides an "archive", or permanent record of the data copied.  That is it's main advantage over all other types of data storage.

Disc longevity compliments the WORM feature by protecting the data for 100 years or more.  This is where a quality disc surpasses the bargain disc.  Bargain discs life span can be in days instead of years.

The disadvantages of recordable discs are numerous.

DVD Duplication, Encryption and Copy Protection

Wednesday, September 23, 2009 8:00:00 PM America/New_York

DVD duplicator publisherEncryption and Copy Protection get a lot of attention  in the press and when discussing disc duplication. Two elements are important to remember.

  1. Are you planning on encrypting or copy protecting your content?
  2. Are you planning on breaking someone elses encryption or copy protection?

We  will start with number 2

First as it's the most important.

In the United States and most countries, breaking or disabling copy protection or encryption is illegal.  Duplication equipment is not capable of breaking or bypassing copy protection or encryption. This applies more to DVD and Blu-ray then it does CDs.  Most CDs are not copy protected/encrypted.  They may have a copy protect "flag" on the disc which will then make it impossible to use a duplicator. Nor should you, right?

Recordable CD DVD & Back-up vs. Archiving

Friday, September 18, 2009 8:00:00 PM America/New_York

cd dvd archivingThe question of "back-up" vs. "archiving" data is an often asked one.  On the surface it seems at first that both are the same thing, or accomplishing the same thing: a duplicate copy of the data.

The difference is two fold:   Time and permanence.

Backup: backups are generally focused on restoring a crashed system like a server.   A backup is composed of all the files that must be restored in order for the system to resume it's normal operation.  Backups are time sensitive.   That is they represent a certain time frame in the server or work station, a "restore point" to use Microsoft's terminology.  Backups tend to be done on rewritable media like DVD+RW or tape because they can be erased and there is nothing to gain by having old backups. In fact they are a liability if not carefully maintained.  This is not to say that a backup scheme does not span a certain time period like a week, or month but it's intended for replacement after the next backup. Backup files also tend to be in special file formats so the file structure can be restored intact.

Recycled Paper CD Sleeves

Wednesday, September 16, 2009 8:00:00 PM America/New_York

paper cd sleeveWe have several choices now for CD sleeves made from recycled paper fiber.  We should mention that recycled does not mean less expensive.  Indeed recycling, especially responsibly costs more money.  The difference being that forests are not being cut down to make more paper when it already exists.  Paper which becomes pulp again has to be remanufactured to make paper.  Paper is made in monstrous rolls which are then cut down to specific sizes.  This means a recycled CD sleeve is coming from a remanufactured paper product.  This is typically represented in how much is actually post-consumer paper (also known as paper waste or simply trash).  100 percent post consumer paper is all paper waste that has been remanufactured.

DVD Packaging Options

Thursday, September 10, 2009 10:50:00 AM America/New_York

dvd packagingAlthough DVDs are the same size as CDs they use a different type of packaging for the most part. Typically DVD-Video is packaged in DVD cases which allow for larger booklets and a distinctive difference from a CD-ROM 'Jewel case'.

Also unique to this type of packaging is the locking mechanism that holds the disc in it's center hub.

The hub has 2 or more "fingers" that hold the disc in place. Many people believe the more the better. DVD Recordable discs are glued together (two polycarbonate substrates sandwich the recording dye and reflective layer) and the feeling is the fewer the fingers the more stress is put on the center hub of the recordable DVD.

CD Ministry Helps Spread the Word

Monday, September 7, 2009 8:00:00 PM America/New_York

CD ministryOne of the great technical contributions to spreading the gospel is a recording device and a means to copy the sermon for easy distribution.  Cassettes have been the common method of passing on the message and providing a revenue source for the ministry.  Cassette duplicators still exist and continue to be used in some regions for cassette ministries.

Many ministries today rely on CD recordable discs to provide an extended reach to their parish beyond county lines.  Most people have CD players so the media is easily played and replayed.  In the kitchen or in the car the message follows along.  You can spin your own radio show with praise and worship along with scripture study.

One should not get caught in the one best method but rather having a program that can be distributed via disc and Internet.

Podcasts are an excellent method to open up to new worshipers and then provide a full sermon on CD  for a small donation.

We are often asked about how a ministry can make CDs and we have a few suggestions.

 Let's out-line the steps

USB Flash Drive? What is it? - a Beginners Guide

Thursday, September 3, 2009 8:00:00 PM America/New_York

USB DriveUSB drives have become mainstream in a very short time with the decrease in NAND flash pricing.  The race for space has zoomed from 32MB drive capacity up to 128GB for USB drives: at this time. That is 128 Gigabyte (GB) = 131,072 MB.  Even if that does not mean anything to you the fact that you can now store that much data on a USB flash drive is amazing. We are talking 4096 of those old 32 MB flash drives.

A USB flash drive consists of a connector which is what we plug into our laptops or computers,  the actual memory chip(s) and strangely enough a microprocessor to manage the memory.  The microprocessor makes the whole device unique as it can self-repair itself by identifying bad sectors.  A small circuit board and some kind of external case to protect the electronics completes the package. Instead of a dumb memory thing being plugged in it's a computer in itself.  The wide availability of USB slots make this type of storage the most compatible removable storage available today.  Memory cards work fine too as long as you have a reader for the card. USB just plugs in to the ubiquitous USB port.

Storing your CD and DVD Recordable Discs

Tuesday, August 25, 2009 6:14:26 PM America/New_York

CD and DVD Recordable Discs can be a challenge storing depending on your preferred listening device.  If you listen to your CDs in your car then some kind of portable carrying case is the most practical.  Carrying cases that support CD jewel cases are becoming a rare breed.

8 disc binder sleeveThe shift has been over to binder sleeved albums, typically holding 8 discs a sleeve/page.  They certainly work in the intended purpose but are bulky and don't provide any protection to the disc.  Worse, especially in a car environment, dust gets into the sleeves and scratches the discs. It's far better to store your original discs in jewel cases or plastic CD cases if you are going to be taking them in and out all the time on the road.

How to Mail a CD Recordable

Tuesday, August 18, 2009 8:00:00 PM America/New_York

CD MailersTo some  it seems an obvious thing. Just drop a  CD or DVD disc in the mail and it will arrive safely to it's final destination undamaged.  It's frustrating to then get calls from clients (if they call) about damaged discs.  How does this happen and what can you do about it?

CD recordable, DVD recordable  and Blu-ray recordable all have applied surfaces. The CD recordable and Blu-ray recordable have the reflective layer, protective layer and any specific print surface layer.  If they get subjected to extreme cold and then are put through a automated mail sorter the discs can have surface lifting and cracked polycarbonate.  Plastic becomes brittle in extreme cold so a disc that is not well protected, or at least protected and mail sorter friendly and your damaged disc calls dwindle to almost none.

Blu-ray Duplicators and Multi-Format Duplication Systems

Friday, August 14, 2009 8:00:00 PM America/New_York

Obsolete tape mediaBlu-ray recordable Technology offers high storage capacity: 25 Gigabytes on single layer Blu-ray Disc media (BD-R & BD-RE) and 50 Gigabytes on dual layer BD-R media. Blu-ray recordable is compatible with players and computer drives that read standard Blu-ray discs and offers both large storage capacity and high definition capabilities.

Blu-ray recorders and duplication systems offer the convenience of producing your own Blu-ray titles and spares the expense of some mandatory copy protection schemes that are required in BD-ROM production.

Best of all Blu-ray duplicators can still copy DVDs and CDs.  In fact one gets all four formats (including DVD+R) with Blu-ray multi-format duplication systems.

Blu-ray duplicators can be divided into two categories:

DVD Towers and Disc Caching for On-Line Access

Monday, August 10, 2009 8:00:00 PM America/New_York

disc serversThere is a unique group of specialized disc reader/writer and caching (storing a disc ISO image on a hard drive) that gives a great deal of flexibility using optical storage. These devices are designed for archiving data and retrieving it.  Archived data can appear like a normal file share when the disc image is mounted. that is when you look at "my computer" the disc or files show up as a drive letter.

For network access via server or network attached storage the direct attached DVD-ROM towers, Network Attached DVD-ROM towers, Disc Caching towers and robotic disc libraries or "jukeboxes" are an excellent method of putting a disc on the network.

These are mountable disc images that can be accessed anywhere on a local area network or shared out into the Internet.

DVD-ROM towers are similar to a DVD duplicator in form factor but instead of recorders (burners) the system is equipped with readers. DVD-ROM towers can be connected directly to a workstation or server via a SCSI connection and are considered "direct attached storage".

Difference Between White and Silver Inkjet CDs

Friday, August 7, 2009 8:00:00 PM America/New_York

white inkjet printable cdsPeople are often surprised to find out that a silver inkjet printable surface is available for CD-R and DVD-R and DVD+R. The more common white inkjet CDs or DVD is far more common and has a noticeably different printed label result. White provides an excellent background to most colors and helps make the colors really pop from the label printer. The white surface is applied in a single layer and has no real "depth" to it. It does provide a base white background to the image. White inkjet printable discs are used the most in our experience.

silver inkjet printable cdsSilver inkjet CDs are meant to mimic a shiny silver thermal printable disc .  Shiny silver discs have a mirror like finish to them.  When they are printed on, the print appears to hover above the reflective surface because there is a clear coat the ink sits on.

Which Blank DVD Media should I Buy?

Monday, August 3, 2009 6:05:12 PM America/New_York

"Which Blank DVDs should I Buy?" is a question we get asked a lot. Many times price becomes a deciding factor on purchasing one brand or another.  Being a savvy shopper is commendable but at what  cost?

DVD blank discsBlank DVD discs are not all the same. Shiny, yes, the same, no.  They may look the same in a quick glance but when you pick it up it's much lighter and thinner because the discs are being made with less material.  This makes them subject to greater flexing and warping.  longevity is reduced by the more permeable polycarbonate layers.  In simple terms that means air can penetrate the protective layers and causes oxidation which makes the disc unreadable.  It does not stop there.  Every ingredient is made with less.  You want a $.10 disc you will literally get a .10 disc.  Just because you might be able to get your data onto the disc does not mean you will be able to retrieve it in a short period of time.  Imagine the PR disaster of having your discs degrade in transit to your customer or even in a short period of time in their care.  This can be a very expensive shortcut.

Audio Compression Formats Digital Recording and CD Duplication

Sunday, August 2, 2009 8:00:00 PM America/New_York

BBC sound o meterAudio compression formats come in a few flavors for digital recording and CD duplication. A CD can hold different formats but the limiting factor is the players support of the various codecs.  Audio CDs use a format called LPCM-encoded which is a special compressed form of a Wave file.  It's important to understand that Wave files are very large uncompressed audio files and audio compression methods, called lossy or lossless are designed to make the files small enough to be shared over the Internet, or to even fit on a CD or DVD. Some examples of Lossy are MP3, ATRAC, AAC and WMA. In the Lossless arena: FLAC, Shorten, Monkey's Audio, ATRAC Advanced Lossless, Apple Lossless, WMA Lossless, TTA, and WavPac are just a few on the list.

If you are making an audio CD then it's critical to get the right compression format or the disc will not play. Worse if you take an even marginally compressed MP3 audio file and 'expand' it to fit a LPCM type format for CDs it will sound terrible. It's best to start with an original audio file and compress it to the format you need. Trying to go backwards will just result in a poor recording. Lossy means parts of the recording are removed, very much like radio stations compression of music (bet you did not know that) to conserve broadcast transmission energy.

CD duplicator or Flashdrive duplicator-What is an Educator to do

Monday, July 27, 2009 8:00:00 PM America/New_York

The use of  CDs and USB flash drives as the modern replacement to the mimeograph and notebook .

Blu-ray Recordable Discs

Thursday, July 23, 2009 8:00:00 PM America/New_York

What makes recordable Blu-ray so much better then DVD?

Blu-ray technology uses a violet-blue laser which operates at a higher frequency then the red laser that DVD relies on. This allows for the information (or pits) to be placed closer together on the same sized disc as DVD. This change of lasers requires additional lasers for backwards compatibility with DVD and CD. When the laser 'writes' it is causing a change in the dye layer to turn dark in a precise spot which represents one 0/1 binary bit of information. So the closer they can be 'burned' the greater amount of information can be stored.

Blu-ray recordableUnlike the past format releases (DVD specifically) consumers do not have to face the decision of upgrading to a new format and casting aside their current library. Blu-ray readers and recorders have been designed to provide full support for the older formats.

With the growing demand for high-definition video Blu-ray disc provides an excellent choice for the consumer. Even better is the fact that a recordable Blu-ray format exists that allows for recording your favorite shows in high-definition. Both write-once and rewritable Blu-ray disc media exists in 25GB and dual layer 50GB capacity. Re-writable allows you to erase the disc so you can use the same one over and over again.

DVD Publisher Workflow for Photographers

Saturday, July 18, 2009 8:00:00 PM America/New_York

http://www.flickr.com/photos/maccosta/It can be intimidating when faced with so many choices and options for CD and DVD publishing and selecting a DVD publisher.  Making things even more complicated for a photographer and videographer is the issue of protecting your work if you provide a portfolio on disc to a prospective client.  We are going to go over some options and I promise to keep it simple. The objective is to get you to think about your needs before being forced by circumstances to compromising your work through piracy.

There are some CD DVD recordable disc publishers that can provide specific encryption to make a disc impossible to copy. The disc is fully playable, it just can not be copied.  These systems can provide custom graphics for labeling the CD or DVD in uniquely labeled disc.

watershield DVDsJVC Advanced Media, (formallyTaiyo Yuden) has been recognized as one of the leading manufacturers of DVD recordable blank discs. JVC  has many types of specialized surfaces including thermal printable, white thermal printable, white ink jet printable, silver inkjet printable and Everest printable surfaces. It's not surprising that JVCAM would introduce a new type of inkjet printable surface called "watershield".

JVC Advanced Media Watershield DVD surface offers a glossy label finish, water-resistant, fade-resistant, hub printable and works in just about any inkjet DVD printer. Unlike some other "water-resistant" printable disc surfaces Watershield is spun applied during the manufacturing process and not applied later as a sticky label. This creates better disc integrity as the surface is evenly applied. Typically an applied label is not centered thus creating an unbalanced disc in the recording and playback mode.

DISC Blu-safe Archive Appliance

DISC Blu-safe

With ever increasing data storage requirements and the need to safely archive your data on stable media that is not effected by magnetic radiation and wear from contact with a read/write head. Recordable Blu-ray provides the next generation to DVD for archival data storage.  Not only does Blu-ray offer Write Once Read Many (WORM) type discs, rewritable recordable Blu-ray media is also available. Unlike having just a Blu-ray recorder the key to successful archiving is automatic operation and a robust file management system.

Rule based file and drive backup is extremly important for many industries.  Especially with the requirements of high resolution imaging we see so much with the "Google Earth" experience.

Thermal Inkjet and Inkjet Difference Related to CD Printer Technology

Wednesday, July 8, 2009 4:42:50 PM America/New_York

CD LabelA very confusing term for CD label printers is the use of the word “thermal”.  In this article I will explain the difference between thermal inkjet and inkjet as related to CD labeling.

The first thing to understand is thermal direct printing and thermal inkjet are not related in anyway except for the fact that they are both CD/DVD printing methods.  One can not print on thermal printable disc media with a ‘thermal’ inkjet printer unless you want a big smear of ink on your disc.  The printable media for thermal printing and thermal inkjet printing are completely different. Inkjet printable media absorbs ink unlike thermal printable discs that are designed not to absorb ink.

DVD Duplicator: Automated DVD Duplicator, Auto Duplicator, Disc Duplicator

DVD duplicators have many of the same attributes that DVDdvd auto loader copiers have with the difference that A DVD duplicator autoloader is equipped with robotics or some kind of singulator: a device that drops discs using gravity and a circular aperture that allows one disc to drop at a time. The Auto DVD duplicator can run unattended for a long time and that is it's primary advantage. It's "lights out" limit is based around the amount of discs it can hold in the input and output spindles. Discs can be pre-printed to speed up the process of duplication.

How to burn a lot of recordable CDs and DVDs

Wednesday, July 1, 2009 8:00:00 PM America/New_York

CD/DVD duplicator tower and rack mount are the workhorse of dvd tower duplicatormany industries including independent music groups, church and ministry, sports organizations, marketing groups, videographers, education and software development and distribution. they are not used for some kind of nefarious production of pirated discs. CD DVD duplicators can not copy copy protected discs. If you are trying to copy a disc you got over at your local rental store it will not work. The units will not copy discs with copy protection, CD or DVD. One would have to look elsewhere for that capability.

DVD Publishers, DVD duplicators and DVD Copiers come in several distinct groups. The terms are somewhat loose in meaning and in the case of DVD copier it is used for both software copying (Usually illegal, at least in the US) and hardware DVD copiers which can not circumvent copy protection.

Five things to ask yourself before you buy a DVD duplicator

Monday, June 29, 2009 8:00:00 PM America/New_York

Five things to ask yourself before you buy a DVD Duplicator

5 questions to ask before you buy

 1.    How many discs do I need to burn in an hour?  A Week?
 2.    Is speed or unattended operation more important?
 3.    What do you plan to do with the disc after you record it?
 4.    Is labeling required?
 5.    Does printing and duplication need to be combined?

With the above questions answered you can have a better idea of what to shop for in a CD/DVD duplicator.  Unfortunately price does play a part in some elements of disc publishing. That is where a little knowledge goes a long way.

..Really the only thing without a price is your time.

Recycled DVD cases, Is this the Green Revolution

Tuesday, June 23, 2009 8:00:00 PM America/New_York

Recycle

Recycling has been around a long time judging by the picture of marble building stones in Italy.

DVD cases are recycled but not in the way you think.  The cases are first chopped up into a "grind" that is sold off as recycled plastic. The recycled grind can be added to virgin plastic to create a 50% recycled product. It is possible to produce a 100% recycled DVD case but it's very fragile and the least durable of one's DVD case choice. Special cases that are colored or clear use only virgin plastic so it's unlikely to find any recycled versions at all. Raw recycled product has to be physically moved around the country both on the way to the shredder and  after it is recycled.  This is why you don't see a lot of 'used' DVD cases or any other DVD packaging. The cost of collecting and shipping used product quickly reduces any cost benefit. This is probably the least understood issue with recycling in general.

Wednesday, June 17, 2009 8:00:00 PM America/New_York

This news release has been out for several months and we needed to post it somewhere on our site.  We have sold Taiyo Yuden CD-R and DVD branded media for over 10 years with amazing success compared to some other brands that quality goes up and down.Taiyo Yuden PrintWrite was and is still the leader in printable surfaces.  Although it's no longer branded under the PrintWrite name Taiyo Yuden CDs and DVDs are among the best.

Microboards' flagship line of DVD and CD recordable media, manufactured by Taiyo Yuden, will now be sold under the name of JVC.

Chanhassen, MN April 15, 2009 -- Microboards' flagship line of DVD and CD recordable media, manufactured by Taiyo Yuden, will now be sold under the name of JVC.

Taiyo Yuden, known in the professional market for having the widest playback and recording compatibility and the lowest error rate of any optical media available, announced the change in March. Microboards Technology, which serves as the primary distributor for the United States and Canada, will continue to offer the same products, but with the new branding.

"This strategy will enable a product that is already known as the premium disc in the market to be adopted by media users who are looking for a reliable brand to purchase," says Mike Laven, Microboards' Vice President of Sales. "With the maturation of the optical media market, media users are becoming more discerning when it comes to the quality of media that they used to store their priceless family photographs and recordings."

cd packagingFinding the right  CD packaging can be frustrating if you don't know what to look for.  There are similarities to the supermarket and the question: Paper or Plastic?

CD packaging comes in a wide range of paper and plastic products.  From the very basic CD sleeve to the C-shell disc holder that provides maximum protection for your discs.

A DVD Publisher Defined

Tuesday, June 9, 2009 8:00:00 PM America/New_York

Rimage DVD publisherDVD Publishers differ from DVD duplicator autoloaders in that they combine a DVD CD printer and DVD duplicator autoloader so the discs can be burned and printed in one operation. This is known as "on-demand disc publishing".  Unique labels and content can be created for each disc including bar coding and unique serial numbers. Several on demand disc labeling technologies exist including: ink jet, thermal,  thermal re-transfer and dye sublimation disc labeling.

The computer hardware requirements of a  DVD Duplicator auto-loader and a DVD Publisher are about the same except for  label software required for the label design and layout. There are some publisher systems that can be networked allowing users to send jobs via their web browser. This  makes it possible for the disc publisher to operate in a wide range of network environments.

Making a DVD Movie from a MiniDV Digital Tape

Saturday, June 6, 2009 8:00:00 PM America/New_York

To make a DVD movie from a MiniDV digital tape You need a camcorder that records Digital Video or "DV".  MiniDV digital tape format is the most popular and what I use too. TDK mini DV tape is a brand I have been successful with. Beyond the filming part of the project you will need the MiniDV camcorder for playing back the tape into the computer's hard drive. This is for both editing and recording over to a standard DVD format or a streaming video format.Typically the connection is FireWire which faster for continuous transfermaking a dvd then USB.

Recordable mini DVD-R is also a popular alternative although I think storage based on flash is more practical when it becomes widely available in consumer video. I've never been a big fan of CDs or DVDs as the source disc for recording audio or video.  It's impossible to edit unless you use rewritable DVDs. The issue with  DVDRW is it can have compatibility problems between drives. DVDRW provides a quick and dirty method of producing DVDs but sacrificing compatibility in the process.

Recording can proceed in any order you like. This can all be edited later into clips and rearranged. That's how the pro video people do it.  so relax and film the show.

Ripping My CDs With an Autoloading CD DVD Duplicator

Wednesday, June 3, 2009 8:00:00 PM America/New_York

I was writing an article about a new lightscribe disc publisher that had the added feature of automated audio ripping and it made me think back to when I ripped all my CDs over to MP3.

The recollection of  the time it took for me to work my way through 500 albums,  some double and triple.  It took a long time and I had to sit and load one disc in at a time and I kept thinking how badly I wanted an autoloading audio ripper DVD duplicator.  The whole audio ripper project was impulsive.  I wanted more shelf space and the massive collection were stuffed into the corner of the room.

So I moved all the discs into my office and started loading one disc at a time using Apple iTunes (don't tell PC)  which worked flawlessly.  Days later I was done with about 40GB in my 64GB USB flash drive.  I have an iPod but it's way too small.  it's an old Nano or something.  Very cool and a very expensive gift.  My Nano is like a jewel.  At 4GB it's now just good for podcasts which I have become addicted to.

Now I can carry around my music collection and just plug in anywhere with my library safely at home and the MP3 files on my flash drive.

Musician and Indie Band Disc Publisher

Sunday, May 31, 2009 8:00:00 PM America/New_York

music cdsIt's amazing to see the changes in music distribution.  I've used reel to reel tape, cassette, and then the big breakthrough with recordable CDs.

I remember wiring the home stereo into the computer after a sound card upgrade. Many a vinyl disc was 'ripped' as the process is now called.  All of a sudden the costs of producing your own music dropped significantly with the birth of digital audio and the CD audio recordable.  Garage bands gain a new tool of self promotion beyond the gig.

Now anyone can be a disc publisher. CDs are the calling card of a band or musician with the ability to slip one into the right persons hands.  It's not always easy to slip a streaming audio file into someones hands.

The Difference Between Thermal and a Inkjet CD

Saturday, May 30, 2009 8:00:00 PM America/New_York

Printable CD media comes in inkjet CD, thermal printable CD and thermal re-transfer for the Rimage Everest & Teac P55. We are often asked the difference between thermal and inkjet printable discs.

Printable CDs for inkjet CD printers come in white printable, silver printable and gold printable ink absorbent surfaces. This is an additional coat on top of a thermal printable surface.

For the most part inkjet printable CD-R surfaces appear matte in finish.  Printable CD discs come in both a standard print diameter and a hub printable CD. This allows printing right up to the center hub (hole) in the printable CD-R discs. There are some manufacturers who coat to the hub with the special inkjet coating but do not extend the silver or white coating thus creating a difference in color hue.   Many surfaces are not pure white nor pure silver.

The drying characteristic of the printable CD tends to make the printable surface off white. Silver inkjet printable runs in a range of metallic gray silver to a white silver, almost a pearl white.

Silver printable CDs special feature is it's 3-D effect on the disc label. Silver inkjet tends to mute the colors down a bit but is very eye-catching with the reflection.

Cheap CD DVD Printer for Home Use

Saturday, May 30, 2009 4:51:04 PM America/New_York

Finding an inexpensive CD printer can be problematic.  Epson makes some caddy based all in one devices which contain a scanner and inkjet printer or just the inkjet printer alone. Epson seems to keep discontinuing the models so it's a bit difficult to speak of a specific models performance.   Caddies are a plastic template that holds a CD or DVD and moves through the printer feeder like an envelope with the disc held in place as the ink jet print head passes over the inkjet printable disc.

Two entry level CD/DVD printers available in the marketplace are the DYMO DiscPainter and the CD Dimensions DISCPRINTER thermal disc printer. The two represent different printer technologies available today. the Dymo relies on ink jet technology and the DISCPRINTER uses thermal transfer technology. Even more unique in the case of the DiscPainter is the radial printing technology incorporated into the DYMO DiscPrinter.

CD Labels and Labeling Options for DVD

Wednesday, May 27, 2009 8:00:00 PM America/New_York

An extremely important point on CD labels is to use some kind of printing method outside of using stick-on labels. Stick on labels are just as bad for recordable DVDs. A misapplied label unbalances the disc (it does not take much) making it prone to errors and damaging the drive in the process.Stick-on labels have come off in CD players and easily jam up car stereos with slot loaders. A CD label maker is the solution.

The choices for printing on a recordable CD is based on several factors. Budget, how much money do you want to spend?, What is the usage you expect from the disc printer? and how involved to you want to be in the printing process?

The on-demand disc printer technologies available fall into 4 categories: thermal transfer, thermal re transfer, dye sublimation and inkjet printing.

Lightscribe for Labeling CD-R and DVD-R

Tuesday, May 26, 2009 8:00:00 PM America/New_York

Labeling your CDs or DVDs presents some interesting choices in finding the most cost effective option.  Some of the options include using a thermal or inkjet CD printer, a magic marker pen or stick-on labels.  A non-printing method, called "lightscribe" provides the ability to label a special type of disc that is made with a unique coating on the label side that is sensitive to laser light (similar to the recordable dye which also changes color when exposed to laser light at a special frequency).

lightscribeLightscribe technology uses a special recording drive that can etch the label image into a special Lightscribe DVD or CD disc.   This process only works in gray scale so one does not actually have any colors on the label. It's simply black and variations of gray with a colored background, usually a gold color.
